Glen Cove Ferry Terminal and Boat Basin

Project Context

The purpose of this section is to clarify some of the most important basic fiscal and design information about the Glen Cove Ferry Terminal and Boat Basin.

A portion of the total estimated cost of approximately 16 million, has already partially been allocated to the City of Glen Cove. The following preliminary fiscal and scheduling information is available to date:

  • 8.7 Million has been allocated to date for design and construction
  • Phase 1 construction anticipated for Fall 2008, for which funding has been currently made available
  • Final build out anticipated for 2012
  • In the process of negotiating additional federal and state funds

The new design and goals of the Glen Cove Ferry are set to achieve a higher level of service and cleaner environmental standards than the previous commuter ferry. In researching and designing for this ferry, the consultant team has taken into consideration matching the ferry operator’s needs with service and vessel types appropriate for this location and its demand.

Ferry Terminal:

The ferry terminal facility design allows for flexibility in function.

  • Can accommodate flexible, leasable space generating revenue and offsetting maintenance and operation costs
  • Ferry operators to manage and/or share maintenance responsibility with tenants
  • Currently have interested ferry operators in line to secure an operation at this location

The demand study included in the environmental assessment report, and required by the criteria of the report, fulfilled its charge by reviewing any possible demand increasing scenario.

Criteria:

  • Base demand is approximately 300 passengers per day
  • Base demand uses internal factors of no service interruptions to the existing transportation infrastructure
  • Additional demand criteria utilizes possible external factors affecting changes to the surrounding transportation infrastructure
  • Such factors as recreational service and airport bound service greatly increase the potential ridership and utilization of the terminal facility

This project has the ability to foster supplementary services and needs of the Glen Cove and Long Island community as well as neighboring Connecticut and New York areas.
