Ferry Demand
A preliminary demand study, using base data representing existing transportation infrastructure conditions, was performed to evaluate the sizing of the ferry facility and its initial parking requirements. It is anticipated that demand will grow from a start of approximately 250 riders, to a possible 600 riders, as the waterfront area develops and the service attracts riders due to the quality and convenience of the service. The need for the service is established by several factors including previous ferry demand, the continued congestion present on the Long Island Expressway and competitive travel time versus the Long Island Rail Road commuter trains. A study was also conducted for the ‘Long Island Sound Waterborne Transportation Plan’ in June 2004, and referenced for this project, which found positive indicators for Glen Cove-LaGuardia and Glen Cove-Manhattan ferry service.
Number of passengers per day:

At a Glance...
- Previous ferry service (2001) ridership of 250 round-trips per day
- Site, terminal, and service improvements are projected to increase demand
- Adjacent residential development anticipated to contribute potential of 100 riders per day
- Ferries taking on a growing need for emergency evacuation plans
Other external factors could slightly or significantly increase demand:
- Manhattan congestion pricing
- Increased congestion for other modes of transportation
- Reduction or elimination of LIRR Oyster Bay branch service
